Mugwort's Shadow, The Ballad of the Badger King, Book 1

Yarrow's Story:

Yarrow, the young hedgehog minstrel, has his life figured out. He wants to play his mandolin, sing a few songs, and eat muffins at the fireside. Traveling across the country with his owl friend and the foxling twins, Yarrow seeks the perfect audience for his genius.

But then the troupe encounters a letter from a princess who is imprisoned by the evil Mugwort and his barbarian army. Now Yarrow's peace - and maybe his life - is endangered.

Can his selfish heart make room for helping those in need?

Mugwort's Shadow is the first book in the middle-grade series The Ballad of the Badger King: In a world populated by beasts of every shape and size, enemies and riddles wait at every turn as Yarrow and the Medley Troupe try to help their badger friend reclaim her rightful throne.

Do Kids' Stories Matter?

Children learn from the stories they read.

Bad stories give them an unrealistic view of the world and how it works.

Good stories can help them learn how to apply Biblical teaching to everyday situations. They might not have to rescue badger princesses, but Yarrow's struggles in The Ballad of the Badger King show character development and self-control. My goal with this series is to illustrate good character attributes and how to handle tough situations without sacrificing plot or pacing and without any heavy-handed narrator moralizing. My characters make choices and deal with the consequences. They're in a fantasy world, but beneath the surface, it's not so different from ours!

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."

Phillipians 4:8 ESV

What Moms Say:

Wonderful Family Story

Melissa, Homeschool Mom

I absolutely loved this book. The characters are rich, the story line intriguing and the setting is idyllic. It will definitely be on our read-aloud list as a family.

Fun and frolicking tale of adventure

Christa, Homeschool Mom

Unlikely heroes, a princess in distress, a nasty villain- this book has all the elements of an enjoyable fantasy story. Written in a way that makes you need to read the next chapter then the next and the next, I can't wait for the next book to come out! It's the kind of story you want to curl up next to the fireplace and read all day. Great for kids and adults alike!

Feast for the imagination

Amber, Homeschool Mom

Colorful, multidimensional characters that pull me in yet manage to entice even my most flighty of children, suspense from the beginning a book you'll read again and again.

What Readers Say:

This Book is Awesome

Male, 13

If you enjoy reading fantasy books you should read this book! I like the artwork on the cover and the formatting made it easy to read. The end was my favorite part. So intense and captivating! Overall pretty amazing

I love that two of them are foxes

Female, 7

I liked that they were going on an adventure, and that Yarrow kind of became wanting to help, and also that he went with Rye, and also that he's a musician. And I also like that the fox twins' past is unknown. It's kind of like a mystery.

I really enjoyed reading this!

Female, 28

I really enjoyed reading this! I loved the animals and their personalities! I loved the minstrel instruments and costumes! The feel of the book reminds me of Green Ember. I did not want to put it down & was so disappointed when I ran out of pages!

Would You Consider Leaving an Amazon Review?

Why am I giving the ebook away?

The reality is, nothing helps a new author more than an Amazon review. Good, bad, and indifferent. Every bit of feedback matters.
